David Dyer, a former veteran and homeless man, has been hired by the state of Massachussetts to help homeless veterans off the streets of Boston.

David is an example of recovery. With a house, a family, and a job, he has left his drug addictions and is now part of the team of people who walk about the city, talking to other veterans and inviting them to join the “Veteran’s Homeless Team”.

Usually, once a week the team walks the streets looking for veterans, and the rest of the days they work to make sure those who have found housing are staying the course.

When they say, ‘Oh, you don’t know what I’m talking about,’ I can say, ‘Yeah, I do, because I was there myself

The first step is offering housing to the homeless, and after they are settled in and they have left the streets, they are offered counseling and treatment for their drug addiction.

Christopher Doyle , David’s team leader explains: “It’s easy to put someone into an apartment, but it’s not as easy to keep them in one”

There are around 58.000 veterans living on the streets. These people who have given up their lives for their country and for all other US habitants. There is still so much more to do!
