At 91 years old, Jane Bishop, also known as “The Bee Lady”, is an undeniable celebrity in the UK. In her bee costume, she has been fundraising for the last 14 years by collecting loose change in a tin can.

If this hasn’t caused much of an impression, listen to this: she’s managed to raise over £100.000! Can you imagine that? Raising £100.000 from spare change?

Jane, a fundraising legend has non stop collaborated with good causes, mainly with Age UK Hull.

Not only does she fundraise: she also visits residential care homes regularly, sharing her warm heart and fun loving nature with residents.

Despite suffering severe arthritis, she works hard to put a smile on other people’s faces too. “The charity is so important, the elderly can be forgotten sometimes so I like to help them,” she says.

After her husband died, she attended a crafts class run by the charity and realized what a life changing experience that had been for her. She decided she wanted other people to feel the same, for many have lost their loved ones and suffer the consequent loneliness and depression.

That’s how it all started, with her feeling the need to give something back and the organization lending her a rented bee outfit to help attract some attention as she went fundraising with a tin. She fell in love with the outfit, and continued requesting it until her daughter made one of her own.

The busy bee has now become the mascot for Age UK Hull and is still going strong.
